Volume one begins with the immigrant John Washington who settled in Westmoreland Co., Va., in 1657, married Anne Pope, and was the great-grandfather of President George Washington.  George Washington was Fonville's Great Great Grand Uncle.

Missouri Military Academy....

Fonville was born here, the son of Lawrence Winans and Lady Ruth (Fonville) Winans (The first female graduate of the Academy). Lady Ruth's father, Colonel Fonville was one of the founders of the Academy. He was affectionately called "Bop" by Fonville.
